Bolt from blue to end tale of grey squirrel

The Sunday Times reports on an innovative method for culling of greys.  For Britain’s estimated 3m-5m grey squirrels the end could finally be nigh, thanks to a hi-tech device that dispatches the invasive pest via a bolt to the head.

The government is testing the deadly ‘Goodnature’ trap with landowners hoping such devices may offer a way of purging the species from British shores.

The baited device is fitted to trees and when triggered uses compressed gas to fire a metal bolt into the squirrel’s head at a lethal speed. Because it can kill up to 20 squirrels without human involvement, some regard it as a lethal but cost- effective “magic bullet.”
